Trekking to the Coldest Place on Earth: The South Pole |
Youngest Canadian to trek to the North Pole |
|||
Paul Hubner, Baffin's president, is trekking to the South Pole in January 2008 with a group called Adventure Network International. The extremely cold temperatures, the strong winds, the high altitude and the remoteness make this one of the harshest places on earth, which makes it an excellent place for testing Baffin boots and figuring out ways to make the technology perform even better. Paul will be raising money for charities for northern youth, as well as Polar Bears International. The journey will launch out from Punta Arenas near the southern end of Chile. There Paul will board an Illyussian 76 and fly to Patriot Hills, Antarctica, located at approximately 79 degrees south. He will then take a ski-equipped flight to 89 degrees. From here he’ll strap skis onto his Baffin boots and drag a sled loaded up with 150 lbs of gear including a tent, fuel and food all the way to the geographic South Pole. He will be traveling in the footsteps of Amundson and Scott. |
When Paul gets back form the South Pole he will continue training for a return assault on the North Pole. This time he will be accompanied by oldest son Mark and his middle son Brent who will be 17 years old and the youngest Canadian to achieve this feat. Paul Mark and Brent hope to raise awareness of the effects that global warming is having on wildlife and Arctic communities in northern Canada. And also raise funds for charity. Doug Stoup will be leading the expedition to the North Pole.
