Real-World Tested™: Alaskan Frontier

July 31, 2025

Last month, Baffin had the privilege of joining an unforgettable expedition into the heart of Hallo Bay, Alaska—one of the most remote and breathtaking landscapes in North America. Led by Baffin ambassador Blake Moynes (@blakemoynes), The SOSA (@the.sosa) team, and wildlife photographer and conservationist Charlee Wild (@charleewild), the latest adventure brought Baffin Vice President Mark Hubner face-to-face with raw wilderness, iconic wildlife, and the perfect Real-World Testing™ ground for Baffin gear.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of grizzly bear territory, this expedition was about more than just exploration. It served as a rallying call for the protection of grizzly bear populations and their fragile ecosystems—a cause close to the hearts of everyone involved.

Gearing Up for the Wild

From the moment boots hit the ground, Baffin products were put to the test. Mark and the team embarked on a multi-day trek through Hallo Bay’s diverse terrain, Real-World Testing new and soon-to-launch gear designed for the world’s most demanding conditions.

These products were challenged by Alaska’s dynamic elements—misty salt air, shifting sand, frigid stream crossings, and the ever-present chance of wildlife encounters.

Day 2: Nature Writes the Script

The second day began with a burst of excitement. In the quiet stillness of early morning, the team spotted multiple grizzlies—including a rare and moving moment with a mother and her three cubs, strolling peacefully just meters away. The chilly air, thick with, gave way to a full day of traversing water crossings, dense coastal grass, and soft sand.

As they pressed deeper into the landscape, Mark continued testing key Baffin apparel and footwear—including MARSH, BASE LAYER LINER SOCK, and BASE LAYERS. Despite the unpredictable conditions, the gear delivered—keeping him warm, dry, and comfortable as the team racked up miles.

Later that afternoon, spirits soared when Mark and Blake took a polar plunge into the icy waters of Hallo Bay. As they emerged from the frigid surf, a grizzly wandered the distant shoreline—an awe-inspiring reminder of the untamed world they were immersed in.

The day wrapped around a fire on the beach, with CUSH Hybrid Slippers on their feet, and waves crashing nearby. A moment of reflection and camaraderie warmed by firelight.

Day 3: Every Step a New Discovery

Rain and overcast skies settled in on Day 3, softening the mood and adding a new layer of challenge. Yet, the team pressed on with curiosity and determination. Along the way, they discovered wolf and moose tracks—evidence of the rich wildlife that thrives here beyond grizzlies alone.

These long, exploratory hikes offered the ultimate stage to showcase the performance of BRUCE MID, Baffin’s upcoming men’s hiking boots. From muddy trails to cold water crossings, the boots remained dry, comfortable, and strong—proving themselves under real-world conditions, exactly as intended.

A Journey with Purpose

The final day brought the adventure full circle, as Charlee—wildlife advocate and founder of Friends of the Wild—joined the team for a reflective close to the expedition. As the architect of this journey, Charlee ensured every aspect of the experience blended adventure, intention, and advocacy.

At Baffin, we are proud to support efforts like Charlee’s and to work alongside ambassadors and partners who share our deep commitment to protecting the natural world. It’s in places like Hallo Bay—where nature writes the rules—that our purpose as a brand becomes crystal clear.

From sunrise treks through coastal fog to fireside reflections after long days in the elements, every step of this expedition reminded us why we do what we do: create performance-driven gear that thrives where adventure meets purpose.

From Hallo Bay to wherever the trail leads – stay tuned for out next adventure.
