Real-World Tested™

South Africa – Eco Tour

rich-text

In June 2024, Baffin Field Team members Mark Hubner and Blake Moynes joined forces with Global
Conservation Force (GCF) and the Save Our Species Alliance (SOSA) at Kariega Game Reserve for a Real‑World Testing™ expedition that combined conservation, community, and gear performance. From anti-poaching patrols to wildlife safaris and community workshops, this venture put Baffin’s gear to the test in one of South Africa’s most compelling eco-landscapes.

This expedition was more than a gear trial — it was a hands-on commitment to wildlife protection, anti-poaching, and community conservation efforts. It highlighted Baffin’s dedication to protecting the environments we explore, while ensuring our gear performs at the highest level under challenging, real-world conditions.

Amidst the ongoing global climate crisis, the South Africa Eco Tour underscored the urgent need to safeguard biodiversity and promote sustainable practices that support the long-term health of fragile ecosystems.

On‑the‑ground participation in rhino tracking and anti‑poaching patrols gave the team invaluable insight into the realities of wildlife protection. This included active monitoring efforts alongside rangers working to protect endangered species.

The team engaged deeply with local communities through educational workshops and cultural exchange. Sessions led by GCF experts and rangers focused on habitat preservation, sustainable practices, and the human-wildlife relationship.

Mark Hubner rigorously tested Baffin’s Terrain Collection (BRUCE MID) prototypes across diverse terrain, from bushveld paths to reserve roads. This real-world testing reaffirmed the durability and performance of Baffin gear in ecologically sensitive and variable environments.

Baffin donated HUDSON boots to anti-poaching rangers in
training – a gesture made especially meaningful by Blake Moynes’ own experience
with foot infections during ranger training due to inadequate footwear. The
boots provide essential safety and endurance support for the demanding work of
conservation.
