PARTNERING TO PROTECT: TURTLE NEST COVERINGS AND BASKING PLATFORMS
April 29, 2026
This Earth Day, Baffin proudly partnered with the Bruce Trail Conservancy for a wildlife habitat build event to support local conservation efforts. For the fourth consecutive year, Baffin employees donated their time to build conservation tools to help protect local species and nearby ecosystems along the Bruce Trail and Niagara Escarpment.
In previous years, the collaboration focused on building 100 boot brush stations that have been installed along sections of the Bruce Trail to help prevent the spread of invasive species. After reaching that milestone, the initiative evolved to support another important environmental priority. This year focused on supporting local turtle populations through the construction of basking platforms and nesting stations to help create safer habitat conditions.

Snapping turtles have been designated a ‘species of special concern’ along the Niagara Escarpment, meaning they are sensitive to human activities and natural events. Turtle nests are especially vulnerable, often becoming easy targets for natural predators. As a result, many are lost each year – contributing to ongoing declines in turtle populations. By building protective nest coverings and dedicated basking platforms, this initiative helps create safer conditions for turtles to thrive.

The basking stations provide turtles with secure, elevated platforms where they can safely rest and regulate their body temperature in sunlight, away from high-traffic or vulnerable areas. The nesting stations are carefully designed and placed to offer protected, undisturbed soil environments where turtles can lay eggs, helping reduce the risk of nest disruption from predators or human activity.
Together, these installations contribute to habitat preservation and species protection, supporting biodiversity along the Bruce Trail corridor.

Baffin has long supported the Bruce Trail Conservancy and its work to conserve, restore and manage land along the Niagara Escarpment UNESCO World Biosphere, protecting ecosystems for the benefit of all while making these natural spaces accessible for exploration along the Bruce Trail.
