In March 2009, Paul Hubner and his youngest son, Ryan, embarked on a journey deep into the heart of one of the world’s most remote landscapes – Baffin Island. As the largest island in the Arctic Archipelago, spanning 305,000 km², Baffin Island is a breathtaking expanse of rugged mountains, glaciers, icefalls, lakes and vast valleys. Its wildlife is as dramatic as its terrain, home to caribou, Arctic foxes, polar bears, and countless bird species.
This expedition marked Paul and Ryan’s first visit to Baffin Island – an unforgettable father-son experience. Like his older brothers before him, Ryan was now able to embrace the thrill of a true Northern expedition. They were joined by famed polar guide Matty McNair of North Winds Polar Expeditions, along with her son and their team of sled dogs.
Together, the group traversed the iconic route from Pangnirtung to Qikiqtarjuaq through Auyuittuq National Park – one of the few national parks located north of the Arctic Circle. Along the way, Paul passed on survival skills to Ryan, sharing knowledge and strengthening their bond in the wild.
This journey was more than just personal – it was also professional. Paul used the trip as a real-world testing ground for Baffin boots, specifically assessing how they perform with snowshoes, skis and crampons over long distances and in harsh conditions. He closely studied how strapping systems impacted the fit, comfort, and function of the boots. These insights play a key role in informing future Baffin product development.
At Baffin, we believe outdoor gear should never hold you back. Our commitment is to ensure our customers are free to embrace the challenge of the outdoors – without being challenged by their equipment.
